Letter from a Cat
Our son shipped out to Basic Training this week. His mother and I already miss him. But we're not alone. One of our cats couldn't help but write him a note.

Alexander,
Your parents won’t give me a break. Yesterday, I snuck in your room while your dad was changing your sheets.
Fortunately, he didn’t notice. After he left, I hopped onto your bed and made myself comfortable.
Unfortunately, a couple hours later I became uncomfortable. I needed my litter box, so began to cry.
It took a while for anyone to hear me, but your father finally did. He let me out. Don’t worry…it was before I did any damage.
But then he shut the door. I probably won’t be back in your room till you are.
As you probably know, I always miss you when you’re gone. How are things where you are? I think I heard you’re in Texas? San Antonio?
You’re probably wondering how I know that. Well, I’ll let you in on a secret. And I’m only telling you because you’re in the military, and are probably capable of keeping it.
I can’t speak whatever language you humans speak, but I can usually understand it. All cats can. Don’t tell anyone.
It’s very frustrating. I often scream specific demands, and am then either casually dismissed or treated like an idiot.
I either get condescending baby talk or rudely waved away. Who do people think I am? The dog?
For a dozen years, my lack of opposable thumbs, inarticulation, and inability to stand on two feet has forced me to feel inferior to beings who have mental breakdowns when some guy they never met misses a putt.
But you’re different. You’ve always understood me. Because you also have confidence and capability. Not that others don’t. But you have special gifts, and it won’t take much for others to see them.
That’s why I know you’ll be fine wherever you are and whatever you do. You have a goal to be a commercial airline pilot, and will endure whatever’s necessary to attain your objective.
Hold on a second…
OK. I’m back. Sorry. The stupid dog decided to stick his snout in my face, so I had to hiss at him and smack his nose. He’s sulking away, so I think he got the message.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah…
It’s important to be strong, and stand up for yourself. But it’s most important to know what you stand for. I think you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be where you are.
And when you stand, stand tall…with head up, shoulders back, and a stride in your step. If you ever need talk about any of this, just let me know. Send a letter to your parents. They’ll pass it along.
I love everyone in this family (even the dog). But you’ve always held a special place in my feline heart.
Uh oh. Speaking of that stupid dog, here he comes again. Guess I need to teach him another lesson. Sounds like you’ll be learning plenty too. I can’t wait to hear about them when you get back.
Incidentally, I overheard your mom and dad talking earlier today. They miss you very much, and couldn’t be more proud of who you are, and what you’re doing.
I agree. I know I’m only a cat. But among the humans, you’re my hero.
Oreo
This is really great JD! I love it.
I wonder if Oreo is a black and white cat. 🤣
