An evil man will burn his own country to the ground to rule over the ashes.
~Sun Tzu
First they came for high-flow toilets, and I did not speak out – because my current commode flushed just fine.
Then they came for high-pressure shower heads, and I did not speak out – because my existing fixture retained its flow.
Then they came for incandescent lightbulbs, and I did not speak out – because I’d hoarded enough to illuminate Miami.
This week they came for gas stoves, and I did not speak out – because I didn’t have to.
Because everyone else did!
Responding to yet another propaganda psy-op to panic people over a new “problem”, social media lit up with anger and mockery against the latest “health hazard.” Being thoroughly rebuked, the assailants retrenched…while retaining parcels of conquered ground.
As with “health passports”, universal masking, “social distancing”, “global warming”, and the “Ministry of Truth”, public resistance was enough that the authors of this idiocy couldn’t complete their latest chapter. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t turn another page, or that they won’t try to change their story.
This is how it works. The Religious Left keeps pressing the demoralized masses into weird rites of unending revolution. Normal behavior and common conveniences that were unquestioned three days ago suddenly become mortal sins that bourgeois heretics are compelled to recant.
Yet occasionally, they resist. And if enough of them do, the perpetrators pull back. But only to a more forward position that would’ve seemed absurd before the overreach was rebuffed. They still steal half a loaf, and the baker feels satiated because he didn’t starve. Like the “Long March” of their Maoist antecedents, this was more a strategic retreat than outright surrender.
Because they never surrender.
The last few years, countless comforts we’ve taken for granted have been under assault by an army of zealots. For several decades (and particularly the last several years) the indispensable ingredients that sustain civilization – our homes, cars, food, fuel, appliances, medicine, materials, and money – have been maliciously manipulated by an ever-brazen “elite.” These amenities endured ridiculous restrictions that reduced quality, diminished reliability, or outlawed them entirely.
That the offending proposals are preposterous seems to be part of the plan. In some sense, the dumber the better. If an idea is stupid enough, reasonable people dismiss the notion that it could ever be implemented. Anyone who worries about it is considered a kook…an “extremist” who peddles “conspiracy theories.”
In a way, the absurdity becomes the villains’ own armor. Battle lines are drawn in ridiculous debates over something almost everyone agreed (or couldn’t have cared less) about before it began.
The topic is often trifling, or affects few. But opinions quickly coalesce along predictable lines, and harden like congealed plaque in a coronary artery. While the plebes publicly bicker and bifurcate over things that hardly matter, the potentates privately implement pernicious plans that always do. As waves chop along the surface, the unseen undertow carries the culture away.
Gas-powered cars become criminal, reliable energy is outlawed, cash is confiscated, beef is banished, and we need to take a drug to cross a border or enter a building. Statues of founding fathers come down while that of a foreign kleptocrat besmirches the US Capitol.
That last one probably won’t happen…this time. It’s likely a congressional version of the stove “debate”: Volodymyr Zelensky is flashy “electric”, Thomas Jefferson is reliable “gas.” They’ll enforce the one by depriving us of the other…eventually.
Like relentless waves against a sandy cliff, the pounding of persistent propaganda can quickly erode the sturdiest of structures. Even…or especially…those that’ve stood the longest. In America, many of the decorative walls have disappeared. Now the supporting studs are starting to crack.
Within a couple decades, we’ve gone from almost everyone knowing there were only two sexes, and that marriage combined one of each. Not long ago, even those who supported “choice” viewed abortion with disgust…or at least some discomfort. Now there’s outright advocacy of prenatal infanticide…even after the moment of birth! If they survive, kids are quickly convinced they can change their “gender”, and probably should…even (or especially) under the influence of profitable surgery or lucrative drugs.
The dysfunction is dizzying. Homosexuality is honored, transvestites are normalized, and contraception is encouraged. To proponents of this warped ideology, too many people populate the planet. The fewer the better…but only if it’s less of us and more of them. It’s become blatantly obvious that we are the carbon they want to reduce.
Like slot machines in a Nevada brothel, stoves are beside the point. As with mask mandates, “vaccine requirements”, or EV targets, they’re merely the latest mechanism to assert control and keep us in line…a pungent gas to throw us off the scent.
Like “smart” thermostats or electric cars, electric stoves are easy to monitor…and simple to shut down. People with propane can more easily live “off the grid.” So can those who trade with cash, grow their own food, put gas in their cars, and exchange conventional medicine for holistic health. That’s why each of those options is under assault.
As the covid restrictions weren’t about “public health”, removing gas stoves isn’t about “protecting children” or avoiding asthma. Except as propaganda props, children are the least of these people’s concerns. This is about controlling and monitoring everything we do. That’s what all these superficially bizarre proposals are all about.
From the perspective of the people imposing them, they make perfect sense. Health passports, central bank digital currencies, and an umbilical connection to their electrical grid enable centralized restrictions on how much we spend, what we consume, and where we can go.
And with a whipped population trained to fear people bringing liquid on a plane or breathing germs in the air, “health” and safety” are simple sedatives to support surveillance. Eventually, with the passage of enough time, people forget how things used to work (or that they ever did), and take for granted the decay their governments inflict.
That’s the real reason kids and young people…those at almost no risk from covid…are last to be unmasked when mandates are lifted, and the first to whom fabrics are affixed when restrictions are resumed. It’s so they become acclimated to a world where subjugation is normal, and other faces are to be feared.
We’re glad the latest trial balloon was apparently shot down. But those who sent it have plenty of propane to launch another.
Yet like a ray of light thru a bank of fog, this episode offers a beacon of hope. There are more of us than there are of them, and refusal to comply is a potent weapon. As is the truth.
The beauty of a free market economy is many options become available. People can get electric stoves if they want, keep their gas-powered cars if they like, or opt for the opposite of each of that’s what they prefer. And then all of them can mind their own business while living with their choices.
There. Another problem that was made up ten minutes ago is now solved.
But the real ones remain unresolved.
